Mango

Mango (Mangifera indica), the king of fruits, is grown in India for over 400 years. India shares about 56% of total mango production in the world. Its production has been increasing since independence, contributing 39.5% of the total fruit production of India. Andhra Pradesh tops in total production, whereas Uttar Pradesh tops area-wise. Maharashtra , Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Karnataka, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh are the major Mango grown states in India. In India, mango is available from March to mid-August.

Mango is a tropical fruit; Mango can be grown on a wide variety of soils under varied climatic conditions. Mango orchard can be grown comparatively with low maintenance costs. India is the home of about 1,000 varieties. Only a few varieties are commercially cultivated throughout India.

Most of the traditionally grown mango plants propagated by seed, these cultivars are alternatively or irregular-bearer, more susceptible for diseases and pests attack, uneven harvesting period, poor quality fruits and low yielding Plants. Whereas for commercial purpose of mango production there is a need to be propagated by the vegetative method to get high quality, disease-free, true-to-type Mango seedlings from certified nurseries.

Characteristics of Ishved Mango Plants:

  • The climate in almost all the districts of Maharashtra is suitable for Mango cultivation.
  • The mango starts fruits bearing from the second to fourth years of Planting.
  • Mango planting, intercultural practices, spaying, etc. expenses can be done through intercropping at least for the first three to four years until the tree is fully grown.
  • Kesar is three to four times more productive than Hapus and the average weight of the fruit is 270 grams, while the proportion of pulp is 74%.
  • The fruits have great sweet-delicious taste. Fruit lasts for five to six days after ripening so this variety is in good demand.
  • Totapuri is getting abundant and regular yield and fruits weighing more than 350 to 400 grams, thick, tapering, green-yellow color and have bright reddish brown strips on it. Fruit can be transported without packing as the peel is thick.
  • On average, 10 to 18 tonnes yields obtained from 225 trees per acre. Fruits are disease free and pest free.
